February 2021

At the time of writing we have just had our first snow for a very long time but today’s wonderful sun has thawed everything and we are keeping our fingers crossed that this winter won’t be too brutal.

We have lowered our minimum spend for a delivery to £50 so that we can help out if any of you are self-isolating or shielding (the delivery charge is £10 if within our local area). This might be especially useful for heavier items such as wood or compost so please do call or email us if you have any questions about this.

UK GROWN PLANTS

We have just taken delivery of some gorgeous UK grown shrubs and plants that are ready for planting as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Some examples are Nandina, Pittosporum, Choisya, Hamamelis, Mahonia and Pieris. Plants raised on nurseries in the UK are often not as initially big and bushy as comparable ones grown in the sunnier countries of Europe, but will soon catch up and perform well. We have always been keen to use British suppliers as much as possible and of course it’s even more important now.

However we will also be getting in plants from Europe and other areas that we simply cannot source in the UK.

BULBS AND PLANTS

We continue to have a wide selection of bulbs growing in pots; these can give you colour in the gloomier months of winter. We also have six-packs that are very economical if you need more plants. A wider selection of herbaceous plants will arrive towards the end of the month but we have cottage garden style plants such as foxgloves and hollyhocks starting to arrive now. We also have a small range of herbs and wildflowers at the moment but this will expand greatly as the month progresses.

SOFT FRUIT

We now have blackberries, gooseberries, raspberries, boysenberry, blueberries (even a pink one) and others. They are so easy to grow and it’s a real pleasure and delight to see them in your garden and then use them in your kitchen.

SEEDS

We are fully stocked with vegetable and flower seeds and all the accessories you may need. If you’re pushed for space, an electric propagator is great as seeds germinate very quickly and then you can move them on to another position in order to make room for your next batch. There are special seeds and kits for children that will help to get them interested in plants.

HOUSEPLANTS

Why not try and make your own terrarium – Instagram has some fabulous ideas. You will need a glass container (open or closed), small plants, moss, stones, activated charcoal and some compost. We have all the ingredients you need in the houseplant shed.

AND FINALLY don’t forget we have …

SEEDS, nest boxes and feeders for the birds

PEST CONTROL for the imminent emergence of slugs and snails

FIREWOOD and kindling

TRELLIS, posts and Postmix

We very much look forward to seeing you this month!

With warm wishes

The team at APGC
