Late summer is a changing time of year, as growth slows down in gardens and
open spaces before the start of autumn. We’ve enjoyed some lovely weather
recently so let’s hope that as the summer holidays draw to a close, we can
still spend many evenings and weekends in the garden.
This is the ideal time to plant as the ground is warm, enabling roots to
establish easily, whilst the top growth is slowing down. Generally
speaking, plants planted in autumn are stronger, bigger and more robust the
following summer than those planted in spring. So, if you noticed gaps in
your garden or ‘lulls’ when there wasn’t anything grabbing your attention
earlier in the season, plant something now to avoid the same situation next
year.
We still have a few fabulous tree ferns which look great planted with Acers
and Fatsias, or as a specimen all by themselves – come and have a look
before they all go! We have great ranges of grasses, sedums and other late
summer performers. The centre will begin to fill up in the next few weeks
with lots of ideas for the coming months.
For pots and window boxes to look good through autumn and winter there is a
good choice of violas, heathers, a range of ‘Tubs and Baskets’ plants and
shrubs at 3 for £10 as well as bright coloured cyclamen. Herbs are
still a good option with a current offer of £3.95 each or 3 for £10.
It’s impossible to have too many bulbs in your garden! Almost all the range
is in stock, and most of them can be planted now, with the exception of
tulips which should go into the ground once it gets a bit colder, in late
October or November. It’s wise to buy all the bulbs you want when you see
them and store them somewhere cool and dark until planting time as we can’t
guarantee the stocks will last. Tulips are always popular and we have two
special ranges which will no doubt sell out fast. Firstly “Best of the
Best”, fragrant tulip varieties which will be happy in borders or in
containers and fill the air with delicious scent. Secondly a pretty range
of species tulips which tend to be shorter than their showy cousins but
have exquisite flowers which will multiply over the years.
If you don’t have outside space, our houseplant area goes from strength to
strength with a wide variety of houseplants big and small, and all of the
pots, composts and other sundries you need to create a stunning indoor
display.
In the shop you’ll start to see more homeware and gift items appearing over
the next few weeks, as Karen and Val head to shows to hunt out new ideas.
We have plenty of items ready for the autumn clean up - bags, sheets,
brooms and tools, including the Niwaki range of beautifully designed
secateurs, scissors and shears. As one of our professional gardener
customers said recently, the Niwaki range are sharp and fantastic to use,
but for heavier jobs, they always revert to Felcos – they can’t be beaten.
As always, using the right tool for the job gets it done more efficiently.
The Chilly’s water bottles have continued to be popular over the summer
months keeping drinks cold for 24 hours. As we head to cooler months
remember that they can keep hot soups and coffees warm for 12 hours so make
sure everyone in the family has one!
Our range of solar lights includes the new ‘Dandelion’ style in two sizes.
These can be used easily in a shady area as the solar panel is on a
generous wire which can be placed in the sun. They also include an AA
battery which enables the light to be used when the solar panel isn’t
charged. Along with the ‘Starburst’ lights, the Dandelions look fabulous
amongst plants in the border or pots or lining a path. They will come into
their own as the evenings get shorter.
We have a good range of pots and containers in stock including the
beautiful Goicoechea pots from this family-run French pottery, nestled
between the Pyrenean mountains in the heart of Basque Country. The pots are
beautiful works of art, passionately hand crafted with a unique and high
quality finish in grey or terracotta. Alternatively, our range of Eco Pots
in black, dark and light grey and white are made from recycled plastic.
They add a contemporary look and feel and are lighter in weight than clay
pots. Of course, we have a good range of more standard glazed and plain
pots and containers – you will find them all at the back of our site, up
the steps or ramp.
As temperatures fall, you will need wood for your fire pits outside and for
wood burning stoves. We have the full range of Olive, seasoned and kiln
dried woods, plus kindling and firelighters in stock, ready to go.
There is plenty to be doing in the garden in the coming months, and the
Garden Jobs section following will point you in the right direction. One
thing it’s worth emphasising is to put down a layer of well-rotted manure
or home-made compost on all your beds and borders in the next few months.
This will benefit the soil and plants enormously. In beds containing plants
which need acidic soil, such as heathers, camellias, azaleas and
rhododendrons, use ericaceous compost.
Look out for the separate email notifying you how much you’ve earned on
your reward card, and don’t forget to bring the card with you!
We look forward to seeing you soon
Warm regards
Rob, Sally and the rest of the team.
